Chilling out in KINLOCH

As the weather was forecast to take a turn for the worse in The Bay, Sue arranged for the three of us (Michael was working) to go to Kinloch, on the shores of Lake Taupo for three days. The parents of someone she works with has a holiday home there and they rent it out to friends & family. The town has one small general store and holiday homes. The view from our bedroom looked straight onto the lake. The house itself sleeps 17 people. On our way down to Kinloch we stopped for an ice cream at Tirau, in a rather unusual design for a shop, which was next door to another unusual shop. When we arrived at Kinloch the weather was fine, but the streets were deserted. Most of the homes are holiday homes that are occupied in the Summer months. After settling ourselves in we took a walk around the town and the shoreline of the lake. The following day the weather turned bad as forecast. Low cloud and fine drizzle seemed to be set in for the day, but come lunchtime the cloud had lifted and the drizzle ceased. The girls decided to stay home and read in between playing ping- pong on the table set up in the garage. I decided That I would go for a walk through the bush to the next bay on the lake. The walk commenced on the beach but soon took me in land and climbing a zig-zag path through dense forest. It was quite humid as I had dressed for rainy conditions. The viewing point of the next bay came suddenly as the bush opened out to reveal a clearing high above the lake and well in land. It had taken me almost 2 hours to get there, crossing two bridges en route. The walk took 4 hours to complete and not another soul on the track except for the four bush rangers who passed me on their motor bikes on their way to setting traps to catch possum, which are a pest over here. The rain returned just as I had commenced my journey home. The following morning we prepared to leave after breakfast, and once more the weather was fine. On our travels back to the Bay of Plenty we stopped off at some places of interest. One such place was an Arty style cafe. This was at Acacia Bay and the outside dining area was a mosaic reproduction of a living room. We stopped off in Taupo town to do a bit of a shop and recall our last visit there 7 years ago. From Taupo we headed North, passing through the Rotaroua guisers, stopping next at Hukka Falls. We did call here last time we visited but thought it worth another visit.
