Another nice day here in Queenstown. Made contact via Skype with those of you at home who were still up as we set out after breakfast. About 48kms out of Queenstown heading South along the Western shores of Lake Wakatipu lies thetownship of Glenorchy. It is known as the "Gateway to Paradise" and is at the Southern tip of the lake. There are lots of different walks from here as well as lots of water activities. Not much going on in this sleepy township. The drive, which took about 40 minutes is officially one of the top 10 scenic drives in the world. As it was too hot to do any walking we had an ice cream (yes I know it's Lent, but.......) and set off back in the direction of Queenstown, stopping off at a couple of the viewing points to take some pictures on
the way. We will have to make the most of this weather as we head for Te Anau early tomorrow. Noted for it's wet climate. The weather forecast for there is cloudy with showers. Fingers crossed our good fortune holds out.
By the way Glenorchy is quite famous for being the venue for several film shoots, including The Chronicles of Narnia,X-Men Origins, Wolverine and the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit. I haven't seen any of them.
After catching up with facebook (Anne) & e-mails on the harbour front at Queenstown we took a stroll round the top end of the lake then through the outskirts of the town before heading back to the motel for a cuppa. Our next adventure was a 3 minute walk from the motel to the foot of Bobs Peak. There, we caught a gondola to transport us 450 meters to the viewing level. The platform gives 220 degrees of the mountains and lakes surrounding Queenstown. Taking a second, this time chair lift to the summit for those "big kids" who want to experience the thrills of the luge. There were two levels to luge down. The first run had to be on the slower run. This was quite fast and windy and took over 2 minutes finish. The second was a lot faster and a bit longer with humps that caused you to leave the track at high speed. It was something you could get addicted to if you lived there. There was a big restaurant and souvenir shop at the viewing level. The gondola lift is the steepest cable car lift in the Southern Hemisphere. We made the return journey down Bobs Peak around 7 o'clock and as it was Friday, went to the chippy for tea. An early night was called for as we had to be on the road for 7-30 this morning to catch a ferry. That journey, you will be able to read about tomorrow. Some pictures from our visit to Bobs Peak.
