Before leaving Mt Cook this morning we visited the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre and Museum. It was a misty, drizzly morning, not at all inviting us to take a walk anywhere. Watched a 3D video on the "Great Man" and his home mountain, Mt Cook. Also watched a video about black holes, which was a bit beyond my comprehension. Some pics of our accommodation, Sir Edmond Hillary Centre and Lake Pukaki (a lovely shade of blue).
The views from the communal lounge and from the balcony were amazing, even though Mt. Cook was covered in low cloud.
Itwas wet,wet,wet as we left Mt. Cook and headed for Lake Tekapo, about 90 minutes drive away. The road out of Mt. Cook (there is only one) took us along the side of Lake Pukaki. Like most lakes around here, the water was a lovely shade of blue.
By the time we reached Lake Tekapo the sun was shining again and we found our accommodation,by the side of the lake.
Lake Tekapo is another spa town, but neither of us sampled the delights. There wasn't much to do there as we only arrived late afternoon. In the morning after breakfast we went for a walk along the water's edge and visited the two tourist attractions in town, namely The Church of the Good Sheperd (an inter denominational church) & a monument to Border Collie's, without whom the land would not be farmed as efficiently as it is.
Leaving Mt Cook we headed back to where our South Island travels started, Christchurch, via Timaru, about 4 hours driving in total. See you there.
