We left Arthur's Pass just over 30 minutes behind schedule in the heat of late afternoon. I took a couple more pictures from the viewing platform of the train during the 75 minute journey to the town of Springfield. It travels through the mountain range down to the relatively flat land of the Canterbury Plains. As we dropped down from the mountains the weather was noticeably heating up.
A couple of pictures at Arthur's Pass Station which I forgot to post on yesterday's blog. The scenic one is a view of the tunnel the train appears from on entering the station.
After a short walk from the station, we arrived at our motel for the night.
Once settled in, we went in search of somewhere that could feed us.
Stumbled on the local hotel (the only one in town) where the Tuesday special was, steak, 2eggs and chips for $12, about £6.50
This morning (Wed 27th) we checked out at 10.15,again able to leave our bags in reception as our train isn't until 5.15 this afternoon. This really is a sleepy town. With it's two streets of housing,fire station, primary school,garage and three cafe's and just the odd tourist on the street. still the sun broke through again by lunchtime so we are managing to pass the time of day, currently sat in the park catching up on my blog. The following pics. have been taken today, commencing with us visiting the train station information centre/cafe.
We came across this memorial to one of the locals, Rewi Alley, who left here after the war and settled in Shanghai where he started a co-operative movement in his community and subsequently became a diplomat for China/ New Zealand trade relations.
The next few pictures were taken on our walk around the town.
We collected our bags from the motel and headed to the station. Hope the train is on time today. It is just about one hour into Christchurch from here. We have a busy evening getting everything together ready for another early start in the morning. The train for Picton leaves Christchurch at 7.00 am so will have to be out of hotel for 6.15
